Of course, you should use ten fingers for typing, but you can start with a layout that’s the most comfortable for you. The small bumps on the F and J keys will help your fingers locate the correct position without looking. This setup should give you a full range of motion. The more you type, the faster you will get. What Is the Average Typing Speed?
The average person types between 38 and 40 words per minute (WPM). That translates into between 190 and 200 characters per minute (CPM). However, professional typists type a lot faster, averaging between 65 and 75 WPM.
What Is CPM and How Can You Calculate It?
The CPM stands for the number of characters you type per minute, including all the mistakes. “Corrected” scores count only correctly typed words. WPM is just the corrected CPM divided by five. This is the de facto international standard.

Practising 'little and often' (15 -30 minutes a day) works much better than an hour or more once a week. If you practise regularly and don't give up, you should be able to learn to touch type fluently in 2-3 months, maybe even less. A total of 10 – 15 hours of practice should get you touch typing slowly.
When you're new to it, touch typing will often take longer than two finger typing because you have to learn a new skill. Try not to become frustrated if you're typing at a slow speed and give it time. Once you know how to type all of the keys on the keyboard with the correct fingers, you can begin to work on speed.
Reach all of the keys while moving your hands as little as possible. Hold your hands still over the home row, only moving them as needed to stretch for distant keys. Use the closest finger to hit each key. Try to memorize the positioning of each key so you don't have to look down while you're typing.
What is a passing score on a typing test? A typist must score at least 50 WPM according to employment typing tests. For a legal secretary, it's between 50-60 WPM. Computer coders need to score 60 WPM.
