Here's what happened to the stars of ITV series Seven Up (2024)

Seven Up! saw sequences of seven-year-olds playing in London Zoo, in a nearby playground and explored the way they grew up in the UK.

The footage still features in the programme which has followed their lives with updates every seven years.

Express.co.uk has taken a look at where some of the Seven Up! cast are now.

Nick Hitchon

Nick was recruited for the show after being seen in the one-room Arncliffe Church of England Primary School, he was only six when being asked to appear on the show.

Seven years after the first series, the team caught up with the youngsters for 7 Plus Seven and discovered that Nick was at a boarding school.

He explained he had no interest in taking on his father's farming business and explained: "I said I was interested in physics and chemistry, I’m not going to do that here.”

Another seven years later, his scientific ambitions were flourishing and went on to study physics at Merton College, Oxford.

Nick faced previous perceptions from some viewers of the show, and said: "One of my friends had me pointed out to him as being destined to run the farm and being educationally pretty inept.”

Catching up with Nick another seven years later for 28 Up in 1984, he was an assistant professor and researcher in nuclear fusion at Wisconsin University.

Nick admitted that moving country had given him opportunities that he wouldn't have been able to achieve back in England.

He went on to marry a fellow Oxford undergraduate and she recalled asking him why he was interested in nuclear fusion research, which he noted “to save the world”.

By the time of 42 Up! in 1998, he was a full professor teaching at the university and revealed: "I was on a mission to get clean, plentiful electricity. It was kind of heartbreaking.”

He also experienced the full gamut of life events, from the birth of his son, Adam, to divorce, remarriage and his parents’ ailing health.

Sadly, it was announced in July 2023 that Nick died at the age of 65 after revealing he had a year to live following a throat cancer diagnosis in 2019.

Tony Walker

During the initial Seven Up! series, Tony was known as the cheeky little East End boy with dreams of being a jockey.

However, despite racing at Kempton Park alongside Lester Piggott he didn't go on to be a full-time jockey.

Instead, he used his cheeky charm that stayed with him through out life and became a London Cabbie, staying close to home in the East End.

During a recent interview with Radio Times, Tony was asked if he had ever regretted saying something during filming any of the shows.

He revealed: "I had a lot of adverse publicity after the last one, 56 Up. I’m a very staunch East End boy, typical traditionalist.

"And the demographics have changed considerably in the East End. What was happening when I was 56 made me out to be what Michael considered… 'That’s a racist comment, Tony,' and I am quoting him.

"And I wasn’t trying to be. I got a bit of flak. But I don’t regret saying anything."

Bruce Balden

Bruce was a pre-prep-school boarder who was often described as being "old before his time" and a shy boy.

His biggest wish during Seven Up! broke viewers' hearts when he claimed all he wanted to was see his father who was soldiering in Rhodesia, “6,000 miles away”.

Luckily, Bruce did end up seeing his father again after he returned from war and went on to study maths at Oxford.

He worked in Bangladesh and later taught at a London comprehensive before moving to his current job at a private school in St Albans.

During the Radio Time interview, Bruce touched on whether he was glad he took the part back then and said: "You feel they will be positive.

"They won’t try to catch you out or trip you up. It’s not a political interview. It’s bringing you out, telling the story of your life so people can see their own lives reflected in that.

"We’ve all lost somebody, we’ve all been through grief."

Sue Davis

Alongside Tony, Sue was the East End girl who was filmed with her schoolfriends Jackie and Lynn.

Sue went on to live a simple life and became a university administrator and married early, however, she was later divorced by the age of 35.

She has since been with her new partner since 42 Up! and admitted that she doesn't know whether she would consider doing another seires after featuring in the latest 63Up! series.

The East End woman explained: "Personally, and just speaking for myself, I am in a good place but things are going to get worse. You’re going to get sicker and older.

"Both my parents are with me so I’m thinking, 'Another seven years, who knows? Am I going to be here, are they going to be here?'

"There’s an element that thinks this would be a good time to finish, but another part of me thinks seven till 70? It’s got a good ring."
